Gloria Bistrița responded to Shala Jehona’s early opener, but Herczeg Andrea’s thunderous long-range strike settled the top-of-the-table clash: our Women’s Superliga team beat their direct rivals 2–1 to take the lead in the standings.
Following the international break, our team returned to league action with an immediate test against fellow title contenders: we hosted Gloria Bistrița at Burus Csaba Sports Park on Wednesday in the eighth round of the Women’s Superliga regular season. Kollár Péter’s side kept all three points at home after a difficult, hard-fought encounter.
The match started well for us: in the sixth minute, Shala Jehona drove into the penalty area and fired a left-footed shot into the far corner to give us the lead. The visitors equalised in the 26th minute when Ciolacu Maria’s looping header sailed over Böröcz Bettina and into the net. We came close to scoring again before the break, but Gloria’s goalkeeper pushed Antal Anita’s dangerous effort behind for a corner in the 41st minute, leaving the teams level at 1–1 at half-time.
Gloria created some excellent chances early in the second half. In the 54th minute, half-time substitute Rubanovici Victoria had a golden opportunity but failed to make proper contact with the ball despite being unmarked in front of goal. Five minutes later, Böröcz produced an excellent save to keep out Ciolacu’s low drive.
Then, in the 63rd minute, a moment of brilliance from our captain proved decisive: Herczeg Andrea tried her luck from around thirty metres, and her thunderous strike wrong-footed the visiting goalkeeper, who was unable to keep it out. We were back in front and held on to our advantage until the final whistle. The closing stages brought further anxious moments, but we conceded no more goals and celebrated an extremely valuable victory.
The three points took us above our direct rivals and into first place in the standings.
After the match, head coach Kollár Péter highlighted his players’ mental strength and the importance of the victory.
“We knew it would be a difficult match; there is a reason these two teams are at the top of the table. At the same time, we felt we could have a slight edge over our opponents today because we can be very focused mentally. The first half was exciting, and the second was even more so. Hats off to the girls! They say you don’t always have to play beautiful football, but you have to win – and we managed to do that today. Our football wasn’t quite as entertaining for the crowd this time, but getting the three points was what mattered, so we could increase our advantage over our rivals,” our head coach said.
Speaking about match-winner Herczeg Andrea, he added with a smile: “It now looks as though Andi – at least according to the statistics – has scored in every match so far. She scored today to make sure this game wasn’t missing from that run either.”
