Marius Corbu has won the Hungarian Cup with Ferencváros, marking an important milestone in the career of our academy graduate.
On Saturday, Ferencváros faced Zalaegerszeg in the Hungarian Cup final, with Marius Corbu included in the squad. The “green and whites” secured a 1–0 victory after extra time, claiming their 25th domestic cup title. Our former academy player came on before extra time, and had the match gone to penalties, he would likely have been among the takers – just as he was in the semi-final against Győr, where he successfully converted the decisive fifth penalty to send his team into the final.
As known, Corbu joined the reigning Hungarian champions during the winter transfer window, and has since made ten league appearances and played in three cup matches. His most memorable performance so far is probably the early April league game in Debrecen, where Ferencváros defeated DVSC 2–0 thanks to his brace, contributing both of his goals to the team’s tally this season.
Ferencváros still have one match left this season, again against Zalaegerszeg at home. To defend their league title, Robbie Keane’s side will need a victory and also hope that league leaders Győr, who are one point ahead, fail to beat Kisvárda.
The Hungarian Cup is the second major trophy in Marius Corbu’s career, following the Super Cup he won in Cyprus with APOEL Nicosia. Another piece of news is that, after the World Cup play-off against Turkey, our former academy player has once again been included in Romania’s extended national team squad. It remains to be seen whether he will receive his first official call-up. Under new head coach Gheorghe Hagi, Romania will play friendly matches against Georgia and Wales in early June.
